Evan Thompson, PhD

Evan Thompson is a writer and professor of philosophy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He works on the nature of the mind, the self, and the human experience. His work combines cognitive science, philosophy of mind, phenomenology, and cross-cultural philosophy, especially Asian philosophical traditions.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will understand the historical and conceptual foundations of Buddhist Modernism and Buddhist Exceptionalism.

  • Participants will critically evaluate the “discovery model” of meditation and contrast it with constructivist or developmental models.

  • Participants will reflect on the cultural, ethical, and methodological implications of linking neuroscience, meditation, and enlightenment.
