Learning Objectives

  • Participants will gain an understanding of the psychological mechanisms and symptom patterns of adverse meditation experiences.

  • Participants will explore evidence-based therapy used in recovery, and learn how these models can be adapted to support individuals after meditation-related difficulties.

  • Evaluate the unique challenges and opportunities in studying meditation-related adverse effects, and discuss how first-person daily speech narratives can be applied across disciplines to improve research and clinical practice.

Jonny Say

Jonny Say is an integrative therapist who draws in particular from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). He has been trained with the leading experts in ACT and CFT along with other 3rd Wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapies like Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP). He is the co-director for the Integrative Centre for OCD Therapy, a leading UK treatment centre emphasising evidence-based treatments, delivered with compassion and a focus in treating the whole person. He has lived experience of adverse meditation experiences, following over twenty years of exploration of meditation approaches. Jonny has worked with many clients who have experienced adverse meditation experiences including dissociation and trauma re-experiencing to psychosis and mania.
