Nathan Fisher, Ph.D.

Dr. Fisher recently received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies and Cognitive Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In his dissertation, he proposed a culturally-sensitive cognitive science framework for understanding meditation-related difficulties in Abrahamic traditions. He is currently a research affiliate at the Clinical and Affective Neuroscience lab at Brown University and a member of the Care Team at Cheetah House.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will gain an understanding of the Varieties of Contemplative Experience (VCE) study and its findings on meditation-related challenges in Western Buddhist contexts.

  • Participants will explore Dr. Nathan Fisher’s qualitative research on VCE in Abrahamic traditions and learn about the types of challenges reported across Islamic, Christian/Catholic, and Jewish contemplative practices.

  • Participants will develop the ability to compare and reflect on the difficult stages reported across Buddhist and Abrahamic contemplative traditions through normative and non-normative appraisals.
