Course Content

The most comprehensive single presentation to data on the Varieties of Contemplative Experience study. The voices of meditation practitioners and teachers from the study feature prominently in this course as they recount in their own words the range of meditation-related challenges and how they responded to them.

  • Part 1 summarizes the study's unique methods, the reasons for conducting the study, and introduces the study participants.

  • Part 2 provides a thorough overview of the range of meditation-related challenges, illustrating each type with descriptions from practitioner interviews.

  • Part 3 describes the factors that influence the nature and trajectory of meditation-related challenges--both risk factors and remedies.

  • Part 4 contends with the possible interpretations of mediation-related challenges from with and beyond Buddhist traditions.
