Course Description

One of the most commonly reported experiences in the Varieties of Contemplative Experience study is also one of the most perplexing and impactful. Join VCE study personnel David Cooper and Jared Lindahl for this one-hour overview of energy-like somatic experiences (ELSEs).

  • Listen to the various metaphors used by research subjects to communicate the unusual nature of ELSEs.

  • Learn the various ways in which Buddhist lineages have made sense of and responded to ELSEs.

  • What helps? What doesn't? Hear from practitioners and teachers about the various trajectories of ELSEs and how they are managed.

David Cooper

David Cooper has been a research associate and project coordinator on the Varieties of Contemplative Experience study since 2014. His contributions include recruitment, interviews, data analysis, and both lead and co-authorship on nearly every project publication.

Jared Lindahl, Ph.D.

Dr. Jared Lindahl has been leading the data collection, analysis, and writing of papers for the Varieties of Contemplative Experience study since 2014.
